Kevin Walters has not given up on coaching Brisbane, saying his inside knowledge of the NRL club will be a "huge asset" if he replaces Wayne Bennett.
The former Broncos captain said he was unfazed by speculation linking South Sydney's Anthony Seibold to the Brisbane gig and backed himself to handle the reins if they were relinquished by Bennett.
Walters looked set to be groomed as Bennett's successor when he officially returned as a Broncos assistant this year, juggling his other job as Queensland State of Origin coach.
However, Walters appeared to fall down the pecking order when he made the shock call to cut ties with the Broncos after just four rounds of the NRL season to concentrate on his Maroons gig.
Walters - contracted as Maroons coach until 2020 - has made public his desire to coach the Broncos and believes his background will be invaluable in life after Bennett.
Bennett - off contract next year - is believed to have asked for a one season extension to remain in 2020 but the Broncos have delayed any coaching announcement until season's end.
"They are a different club the Broncos. They are not your everyday club, they are a big brand," Walters told Sky Sports Radio.
"It's no different to coaching Queensland. If you have got the inside knowledge on how the team performs and how the organisation works then it is always a big benefit.
"From a coaching point of view I think it is a huge asset to know what a club stands for and what a club is all about before you put your feet under the desk."
Seibold, who has delayed Rabbitohs contract extension talks until season's end, is believed to be favourite to take over from Bennett after the club missed out on their main target, Melbourne's Craig Bellamy.
Asked if he was annoyed he had not been mentioned as a Broncos candidate, Walters said: "It doesn't really bother me.
"What's happened at the Broncos, what they are trying to sort out with Wayne Bennett is a tough one for them.
"There are plenty of candidates out there I would have thought could get the job done but you'd like to think that if given the opportunity you would do a pretty good job yourself.
"We will just wait and see ... but one day I would love the opportunity to coach at the Broncos."
Walters believed the Broncos' decision to delay a coaching announcement until season's end was "very smart".
Brisbane hooker Andrew McCullough said the speculation over Bennett's future had not been a distraction for the seventh-placed Broncos.
"It's a business now regardless of whether you are a coach or a player. We get on with business," he said.
