Warning over Indonesian fighters in Syria

An Australian academic is warning of the repercussions of an upsurge in Indonesians fighting with rebels in Syria.

A new report by the Jakarta-based Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict reveals a rise in Indonesians engaging in the Syrian conflict.

The study suggests extremists are using the Syrian war as an opportunity to prosecute their Islamic agendas.

Professor Greg Barton specialises in Indonesian studies and global terrorism at Monash University.

He's told Zara Zaher an estimated 50 Indonesians are fighting with rebels in Syria, warning their actions could lead to a resurgence of terrorism across the region, including in Australia.
