Warnings of fake drugs sold by criminals

Labor has warned Australians are at risk from counterfeit medicines as a result of budget cuts to the medicines regulator.

Budget cuts to the medicines regulator would put consumers at risk from counterfeit drugs, federal Labor is warning.

Media reports suggest the Therapeutic Goods Administration is set to cut senior investigative staff, despite confidential health department files warning of a growing risk from organised criminals peddling fake medicines.

Labor's assistant health spokesman Stephen Jones said budget cuts had stripped up to $8 million from the TGA since last year with more cuts to come, accusing the government of being asleep at the wheel.
