Indigenous leader Warren Mundine has been appointed to the SBS Board for a term of five years.

The former Indigenous Advisory Council chairman, who has extensive media experience as a commentator and presenter, will join the nine-person board as a part-time non-executive director.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, congratulated Mr Mundine on his appointment to the SBS Board.

“Mr Mundine is a distinguished Australian. He will be a valuable addition to the SBS Board, bringing over 40 years of experience in roles across government, business and the community sector,” Minister Fletcher said.

The 64-year-old's appointment fills a vacancy created with the retirement of Dr Bulent Hass Dellal on 2 June 2020 and the subsequent appointment of an existing non-executive Director, Mr George Savvides AM, to the position of Chair of the SBS Board on 9 July 2020.

Mr Mundine is a member of the Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yuin people of NSW.

He is Chairman of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation and has served as Chairman and Director of the NASIDA Dance College and Foundation.

The Government said it welcomed the experience Mr Mundine will bring to the SBS Board, including his distinguished service to the community as a leader in Aboriginal affairs and an advocate for enhancing both economic and social outcomes for Aboriginal people.
