Onions are so 2015, a hungry little fan at Melbourne's Big Bash game has proved.

Footage of the young boy sitting at the MCG and chomping eagerly into a whole watermelon, skin and all, went viral on social media on Saturday.

The hashtag #watermelonboy was the top trending hashtag in Melbourne, as people watching the cricket demanded to know whether the youngster had finished the lot.

"I can confirm that #watermelonboy is now going into the African jungle #BBL05," host of Network Ten's I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Dr Chris Brown, tweeted.

A crafted image that combined the boy's chomping efforts with a photo of former prime minister Tony Abbott eating an onion also started circulating.

The boy was among a record crowd at the highly-anticipated local derby between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades.

Mr Abbott sparked a similar social media storm when he chowed down on a whole raw onion during a visit to a Tasmanian farm last year.
