Wayne Bennett on whistlestop England trip

Wayne Bennett is using a flying visit around England to size up his potential new charges before heading back to Brisbane for State of Origin II.

New England boss Wayne Bennett will combine his fact-finding trip with a spying mission when he drops into the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington on Friday night.

The veteran Australian coach began his whistlestop English Super League trip at Huddersfield on Sunday, will be in Widnes on Thursday night, and will watch the top-four clash between Warrington and Catalans Dragons before returning to Brisbane in time for State of Origin II on Wednesday.

Wolves quartet Ben Currie, Stefan Ratchford, Chris Hill and Daryl Clark, who were among the group of players at an England get-together in Leeds this week, will all get the chance to impress Bennett, who will also be able to cast his eye on up to a dozen Catalans players who could feature for the opposition in his first game as national coach in October.

Currie looks certain to win his first cap, either in the one-off Test against France or in the Four Nations Series that follows, after being a non-playing member of Steve McNamara's squad for the 2015 series against New Zealand and he appreciates the significance of Bennett's presence at Friday's game.

"It's a fresh start with a new coach and everyone is on an even playing field," Currie said.

"I think he's coming to our game, so it would be a good one to impress in."
