Acting Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has responded to a new poll showing growing support for One Nation, saying it's a wake-up call for the major parties.
Forty-five per cent of Queensland voters in the Galaxy Research survey believe Pauline Hanson responds better to their concerns than the coalition or Labor.
Forty-six per cent disagreed while nine per cent was unsure, the poll published by The Courier Mail on Saturday shows.
The anti-immigration party's federal vote in the state has more than doubled from 5.5 per cent to 12 per cent since the July election, while the Liberal-National primary vote has dropped from 43.2 per cent to 39 per cent according to the survey.
Mr Joyce said sometimes Australians sent a message to parties to "teach them a lesson".
"And when they do that you take your medicine, you wake up, sharpen your act up and get back to work," he told reporters in Darwin on Saturday.
The Nationals leader said it underscored the importance of politicians working hard and engaging with the public.
People had a right to vote for whomever, but he'd focus on growing the Nationals' voter base.
"You get round to and say g'day to people and get a sense of what they want," he said.
"Because they know you can't get it right every time and do everything for them, but they want you to show the humility that you're trying."
The poll was taken on November 9-10, after Donald Trump's presidential victory in the United States.
