We need confident leaders post Brexit:PM

Malcolm Turnbull says Australians expect strong and decisive economic leadership after Brexit.

Malcolm Turnbull has vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard the nation from economic shockwaves generated by Brexit.

The prime minister has called for unity in uncertain financial times saying the nation should stick with the coalition's economic plan.

Whoever wins power on Saturday would have the best advice from financial regulators on measures needed to limit any economic impact flowing from Britain's vote to withdraw from the European Union.

"My coalition team will be doing everything in our power to safeguard Australians and Australian business from the risk of any external shock," Mr Turnbull told the National Press Club in Canberra on Thursday.

Australians expected strong and decisive economic leadership at this time, which was vital for confidence.

"The economy does not rule our lives; but the assurance of a strong economy helps underpin that fundamental confidence in our future."
