Weakened Giants primed for in-form Roos

An understrength Greater Western Sydney meet North Melbourne in Tasmania on Saturday but Mark McVeigh believes it's a great opportunity for fringe players.

Greater Western Sydney assistant coach Mark McVeigh is taking the glass-half-full approach over their mounting injury list.

The Giants meet in-form North Melbourne on Saturday afternoon in Hobart but will be without co-captain Phil Davis, ruled out of the crunch AFL clash earlier this week.

Midfield gun Josh Kelly is sidelined with a persistent groin injury, Toby Greene is still weeks off and utility Matt de Boer (hamstring) is expected to be out for three rounds.

Brett Deledio (hamstring), Tom Scully (ankle) and Zac Williams (Achilles) are also out of action.

"Absolutely we get flat about it," McVeigh told reporters on Friday.

"But it only lasts 12 hours because you can't dwell on it too long. On the flip side we get players that can get an opportunity that haven't been able to get one."

One of those is Tim Mohr, who McVeigh expects will spend some time marking Roos' big man Ben Brown along with Aidan Corr.

Brown leads the Coleman Medal race after eight rounds with 26 goals.

"Coming home is one thing but Tim's been in great form at NEAFL level," McVeigh said.

"He's been one of the most consistent players. We feel likes he's in the side to really contribute."

North Melbourne - tipped by many as wooden spooners - nearly beat reigning premiers Richmond last weekend.

They have an imposing 12-4 record at Blundstone Arena since they started hosting games there in 2012

But their most recent loss south of Bass Strait came against the Giants by 32 points in April last year.

"We have but we also looked at us beating them down here last year," McVeigh said when asked if his side analysed footage of how the Roos handle Tasmanian conditions.

"We know that we're coming up against one of the quality sides in the AFL at the moment. Their form lines suggests that they can do that (make finals)."

Jarrad Waite will be given until game day to prove his fitness after suffering a corked hip in the 10-point loss to Richmond.
