Webster fires for Tasmania at Gabba

Beau Webster has racked up another ton after a George Bailey failure to help lift Tasmania to 9-269 in their day-night Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland.

Another century by young gun Beau Webster has inspired cellar dwellers Tasmania after a George Bailey failure in the day-night Sheffield Shield clash against Queensland at the Gabba.

Webster hit 106 before the tail wagged to help lift the Tigers to 9-269 by stumps on the first day of the pink ball clash.

The 22-year-old Webster was backing up from his maiden first-class ton - 107 - scored against Victoria barely a fortnight ago.

He struck 13 fours in his 191-ball knock after arriving at the crease with Tasmania reeling at 1-10 in just the fifth over when James Hopes (2-51) removed Ben Dunk for just two.

More alarm bells were ringing when the Tigers were reduced to 3-41 after returning Australian one-day international batsman Bailey was caught behind off Jack Wildermuth (3-56) for a 14-ball duck.

A 54-run ninth wicket stand by Evan Gulbis (40) and Sam Rainbird (22 not out) further frustrated the Bulls in their crunch clash that ended under a smokey haze due to nearby bushfires.

The Chris Hartley-led Queensland are less than one point outside the top two on the Shield ladder with three more matches to play until the March grand final.

Bulls wicketkeeper Hartley moved to 499 Shield catches when he snaffled up a Jake Doran (27) edge off Hopes, equalling record holder and former Victorian gloveman Darren Berry.

Former Test quick Peter George nabbed 3-45 for Queensland.

Tasmania welcomed back skipper Bailey from Australian one-day duty in New Zealand at the expense of ex-Test batsman Alex Doolan.

Speedster Jackson Bird is unavailable due to Test duties.

The Bulls made two changes for the day-night round with paceman Mark Steketee and batsman Marnus Labuschagne coming into the squad for Jason Floros and Test inclusion Joe Burns.
