A wedding photographer has allegedly swindled several NSW camera equipment hire companies out of more than $170,000 by pawning their expensive gear.

The 47-year-old man was arrested at a Blacktown pawn shop in western Sydney on Saturday night.

NSW police say he carried out the scam nine times between July 2013 until May this year, making more than $176,000 from the sale of high-end photographic equipment he had hired.

He will appear in the Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday charged with nine counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage.
