The A-League season kicks off tonight when the Brisbane Roar takes on the defending champion Melbourne Victory.

But there's little doubt which fixture in the opening week stands out.

A record crowd will be in attendance for the Western Sydney Wanderers derby match with Sydney FC on Saturday night.

Ticket pre-sales have already made it the biggest regular season club game of any code ever seen at Sydney Olympic Stadium.

And for Sydney FC Coach Graham Arnold, it shows football as a code is growing in Australia.

"It'll be a historic night in the A-League but you know, as I said before, you've got the Sydney Swans against GWS major semi-final two weeks ago 62,000. Round one of the A-League 65,000-plus - it shows you that we're heading in the right direction."

With fine weather expected, a crowd in excess of 70,000 could well be in attendance.

SBS will have live coverage of tonight's season opener between Brisbane and Melbourne Victory from 7.30pm.

Also getting underway this weekend is the National Basketball League.

The sport has gone through several peaks and troughs in recent years, but this season is shaping as one of the most open for many seasons.

The Perth Wildcats go into this season as the defending champions, but new Sydney Kings coach Andrew Gaze says the winner of this year's title is too hard to predict.

"The NBL this season is as close as I can ever remember it ever being. If you look at most sporting organisations around the world, they're all striving for that uncertainty of outcome. They've got that in spades here in the NBL."

The Kings start their campaign against the Brisbane Bullets in Sydney on Saturday evening.

SBS has one live match a week starting this Sunday at 3pm when Melbourne United takes on the Adelaide 36ers.

On Sunday evening, Australia's cricketers will be looking to salvage some pride in Port Eilzabeth against South Africa.

The five-match series is already gone after losing the opening three matches.

The last match in Durban was a morale-sapping four wicket loss despite Australia having scored 371 runs.

Still, captain Steve Smith is hoping his side can regroup in the final two matches of the series.

"For us I guess it's just about trying to execute our skills as well as possible. We've still got two games to play so, hopefully, the guys can come back and we can win the last two matches."

The Socceroos are on their way back from Jeddah after this morning's World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia.

Ange Postecoglou's side is now heading for Melbourne and Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Japan at Docklands Stadium.

It's sure to be a tough test, but Postecoglou is confident whoever takes the field against the Samurai Blue will be able to do a good job for him.

"There's probably two or three line ups I could put in there that I would be confident of being able to play our kind of game, so it's just a matter of going with the one that I think will get the job done."

The top two teams in Australia's group qualify directly for the 2018 World Cup.

In motorsport this weekend there's action at home and abroad.

Suzuka will host the Japanese Grand Prix with Australia's Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull going for back to back victories after a win in Malaysia.

Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are still on top of the standings.

In the New South Wales town of Bathurst, the leading drivers in the V8 Supercar championship will fight it out at the famous Mount Panorama circuit.

Former Indy Car driver Simona de Silverstro is back for another attempt to familarise herself with the circuit.

The Swiss driver will make her full Supercars debut next season on a three-year deal.

She'll be out to improve on last year when she finished last of the cars that didn't suffer mechanical breakdown or crash out.

And finally, game one of Netball's Constellation Cup gets underway between Australia and New Zealand in Sydney on Sunday.

After the World Cup decider between the nations went down to the wire at the Olympic Park complex, when Australia came out on top 58 to 55, another close contest is being predicted.
