Melbourne had superstar fighters vying for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, while New Zealand started to turn the tables on Australia in the cricket.
First up, and in a shock result Ronda Rousey has been knocked out by Holly Holm to claim the UFC bantamweight title at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium.
It was a tense start for Rousey, who paid the price for launching an early all-out attack, enduring several hard hits.
A head kick delivered just under a minute into the second round by multiple boxing world champion Holm saw Rousey hit the floor, and maybe even fall unconscious before the fight was stopped.
Holm says she could feel the crowd supporting her.
"I had so much love and support, I just felt like how can I not do this with all that love."
The win means Rousey's record now stands at 12-1, while Holm's moves to 10-0.
In cricket, and batsman Usman Khawaja has suffered a hamstring strain on day two of the second test against New Zealand, ruling him out of the final match as well as the opening test against the West Indies.
Meanwhile, Ross Taylor scored the first double century by a New Zealander against Australia, sharing a record partnership of 265 runs with Kane Williamson on day three at the WACA.
The tourists finished just 49 runs behind the hosts at 6 for 510.
Williamson says the Black Caps are staying cautious ahead of day four.
"Yeah there is a lot of belief but also we don't get too far ahead of ourselves, we still are a little bit behind in this match - obviously on the scoreboard, but having to bat last could bring its challenges as well so it's important that we look to play well in the first session tomorrow and take it from there."
Mitchell Starc seemed to relish the conditions, hitting the 160 kilometres-per-hour mark with the fourth ball of his 21st over, and taking a chunk out of the bat of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum with another.
To A-League now, and the Western Sydney Wanderers barely broke a sweat during their 3-0 win over Sydney City on Friday night.
Controversy surrounded a goal from Italian signing Federico Piovaccari when the referee overlooked an offside flag in the lead-up, but it was allowed to stand.
Saturday saw the Newcastle Jets draw 1-1 with the Central Coast Mariners, after conceding a goal in the 93rd minute at Hunter Stadium.
But the day's big match belonged to reigning premier Melbourne Victory, who triumphed over Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium.
A crowd of almost 16,000 were kept on the edge of their seats as the lead changed several times, following a textbook start from the Sky Blues.
A goal in the 68th minute from Kosta Barbarouses put Victory in front, before Besart Berisha sealed the win and his double in injury time.
Sydney coach Graham Arnold says despite the loss he was impressed with his side's performance.
"Continue playing like that and you won't lose too many. Again it's a very positive performance, I thought there was nothing between the two sides. I thought it was a good spectacle, at least the crowd that turned up got a good game of football to watch, plenty of goals. And now maybe there'll be no more boring, boring Sydney."
And Brisbane have won against Perth at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday night 1-0, propelling the side to two points clear on top of the ladder.
In the first round of the Euro playoffs, Ireland have drawn with Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-1, in a game obscured by thick fog.
In Stockholm, Sweden has beaten Denmark 2-1.
The game was scoreless until 45 minutes in, when Emil Forsberg found the net with a pass from Mikael Lustig.
The start of the second half saw Swedish captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic score again for his side before Nicolai Jorgensen snatched a late goal for the Danes.
The Scandinavian rivals will meet again on Tuesday.
Saturday's other playoff saw Ukraine triumph over Slovenia 2-0, while Brazil drew 1-1 against Argentina in the South American World Cup qualifier.
In the friendlies, Belgium have come from behind to beat Italy 3-1, cementing their status as one of the favourites for next year's Euro tournament.
Friday night's match between Germany and France was interrupted by terrorist attacks across the French capital, with one of the attacks taking place outside the stadium.
France went on to win against Germany 2-0.
French President Francois Hollande, who had been watching the game, was evacuated, and players from both teams spent most of the night in the stadium.
Several sporting fixtures across France have now been postponed as the country prepares for three days of mourning.
Officials say at this stage the Euro 2016 finals will not be affected.
