Weightlifters set records at Asian Games

North Korea's Kim Un-Guk has continued the weightlifting world record spree at the Asian Games, breaking the 62kg record.

North Korea's Kim Un-Guk joined Kazakhstan's Zulfiya Chinshanlo and Taiwan's Hsu Shu-Ching in setting a weightlifting world record at the Asian Games in South Korea on Sunday.

Flamboyant pocket-rocket Kim shattered a 12-year-old weightlifting world record in the snatch in the men's 62kg event.

Kim, who stands just 1.59m tall hoisted 154 kilograms to break the previous mark of 153 kilograms set by China's Shi Zhiyong in 2002.

Kim already holds the combined world record of 327 kilograms set in winning gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games and he punched the air in delight, revelling in the cheers from South Korean supporters who chanted his name.

Finally he gave a military-style salute to the North Korean delegation in the stands before retiring to the warm-up area to prepare for the second half of the competition, the clean and jerk.

Earlier on Sunday, Chinshanlo broke her own clean and jerk world record but missed out on Asian Games gold when Taiwan's Hsu swiftly equalled her lift.

In an extraordinary sequence, both athletes hoisted 132 kilogram to eclipse Chinshanlo's 53kg class record, set at the London 2012 Olympic Games, by one kilogram.

Chinshanlo still had one lift remaining and raised the weight to the 137kg that she needed for outright gold, but she could not complete the lift.

Combined with the snatch, Hsu's lifts totalled 233kg, against 228kg for Chinshanlo.
