Weightlifting champ gets ban for beating

Korean weightlifter Sa Jae-hyouk has been banned for a decade after allegedly beating fellow athlete Hwang Woo-man at a bar.

South Korea's weightlifting authorities have suspended an Olympic gold medallist for 10 years for allegedly beating a junior weightlifter.

The Korea Weightlifting Federation says in a statement that it took the disciplinary measures against Sa Jae-hyouk on Monday. The 30-year-old Sa won the 77-kilogram division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Sa allegedly beat fellow athlete Hwang Woo-man at a bar in the city of Chuncheon on Thursday, leaving the 21-year-old with injuries that require six weeks of medical treatment.

Hwang told South Korean media that Sa beat him because he talked to acquaintances about a previous incident involving the pair.
