Weightman, Shelley make top 10 in Chicago

Australians Lisa Weightman and Michael Shelley have recorded top-10 finishes in the Chicago Marathon.

Australian marathon stalwarts Lisa Weightman and Michael Shelley continue to excel in the lead-up to next year's Commonwealth Games.

The pair both recorded their second top-10 finishes in big-city marathons this year with standout performances in Chicago on Sunday.

Weightman was sixth in the women's race in two hours 28 minutes and 45 seconds and Shelley was 10th in the men's event in 2:12:52.

They also finished inside the top 10 at the London marathon back in April.

Gold Coast local Shelley is the reigning Commonwealth champion, having won the title in impressive style three years ago in Glasgow in a race where the next five places were filled by runners from Kenya and Uganda.

The 38-year-old Weightman has made a stunning return to elite-level running since the birth of son Peter in late 2014.

Kurt Fearnley was second in the men's wheelchair marathon in Chicago and fellow Australian Madison de Rozario was fourth in the women's race.

Fearnley has won the Chicago wheelchair marathon five times and finished runner-up on three occasions.
