In-form Adelaide Strikers batsman Jonathan Wells is eyeing a promotion up the batting order after notching his fourth not-out in six BBL knocks in Sunday's six-wicket defeat to the Sydney Sixers.
Coming in at No.5 in the 12th over, Wells stroked a brisk unbeaten 42 off 29 balls to accelerate what had been a stop-start Strikers innings.
Wells has notched 134 BBL runs this summer - third-best for the Strikers after openers Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey - at a strike rate of 121.8 and is proving an adept finisher in an at-times brittle middle order.
His average of 67.00 is the best in the competition for anyone with 100-plus runs, ahead of the likes of D'Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Lynn and Jos Buttler.
With Carey leaving the Strikers for one-day international duties and Jake Lehmann terribly out of form and seemingly now out of favour with the selectors, Wells would welcome the opportunity to move up the order.
"I'd like to bat a bit higher," said Wells, who has opened the batting in all three formats for Tasmania, Western Australia and the Hobart Hurricanes.
"In Twenty20 cricket, if you ask anyone, they'd probably want to bat at the top. It would be ideal to face as many balls as possible.
"Whether Wells' wish is granted remains to be seen but the Strikers will be forced to make some changes for Friday's clash with the Melbourne Stars.
Carey, along with pacemen Peter Siddle and Billy Stanlake, have been named in Australia's squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India starting Saturday at the SCG.
Wells is confident the reigning champions have the reserves to get back in the winner's circle despite the trio's absence.
"I think we can cover it," he said.
"We've got pretty good depth. That's a challenge we'll have to come up against."
