Bosnia and Herzegovina tennis players are embracing underdog status for their looming Davis Cup tie against Australia.

Captain Amer Delic says his team faces a stiff challenge against the Australians when the tie starts on Friday in Adelaide.

And Delic urges tennis followers to give the cup's revamped format - best of three-set matches over two days - a chance before casting judgement on the change from five-set matches over three days.

"I can't really form an opinion just yet. We'll see," Delic told reporters on Tuesday.

"I know what it was, I know how awesome it was to be a part of it ... the emotions are on a whole another level, playing five-setters and having your team cheering for you.

"Tennis is such a selfish sport, individually they just play for themselves, not too many players get to experience this format of playing.

"But I think this (new format) has legs to be awesome ... there's a lot of unknowns but we have got to give it a try."

Delic said his team of Damir Dzumhur, Mirza Basic, Tomislav Brkic, Nerman Fatic were under no illusions about the magnitude of the task against Australia.

"Australia is definitely favourite," he said.

"We know it's going to be intense, it's going to be tough.

"But thankfully matches aren't played on paper, instead you have to go out there and execute and get it done."

Australia captain Lleyton Hewitt has a squad of Alex de Minaur, John Millman, Jordan Thompson, John Peers and Alexei Popyrin to pick from.
