There are still more than 44,000 homeless people under the age of 25 in Australia but the federal government says it's gone a long way towards tacking the problem.
"We are making progress," Social Housing and Homelessness Minister Mark Arbib said at the launch of Youth Homelessness Matters Day in Sydney on Tuesday.
"We've come a long way as a country in the last four years. Homelessness wasn't even on the map. We now know the size of the problem and we've got to make sure we fight it every day," Senator Arbib said.
"At present we're spending $5 billion on the homelessness sector, on services but also on constructing new dwellings, and we are making progress," he said.
"We are delivering more than 190 new and expanded initiatives across the country ... including support for young people who leave the juvenile justice system, young indigenous parents to maintain their rental tenancies, and for young people transitioning to independence," he said.
