We're not ripping you off: Banks

Banks have rejected claims they're ripping customers off, after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, unions, the Greens, and even Channel Seven TV celebrity David Koch blasted banking fees.

Australian Bankers' Association chief executive Steven Munchenberg says households paid on average just 13 cents a week more in fees last financial year an increase of one per cent.

The discussion came after Reserve Bank figures suggested Australian banks collected almost 13 billion dollars in fees from customers last financial year, up nine per cent on the previous year.

"There's been far too much gouging in the past on bank fees and charges," Mr Rudd told Channel Seven Sunrise program.

"People are right to be angry."

He did concede that the most recent data showed "the level of gouging has slowed a bit from where it was in the past", but that would be "no consultation" to bank customers.
