West Indies are 0-27 in the second Test after Pakistan frustrated the visitors on a flat wicket before being bowled out for 452.
Darren Bravo, who hit a gutsy century before West Indies lost the first day-night Test by 56 runs, was unbeaten on 15 and Leon Johnson was 12 not out at tea on the second day.
Bravo had to open the first innings after regular opener Kraigg Brathwaite had been off the field too long late in the Pakistan innings.
Earlier, fast bowler Shannon Gabriel (5-96) took his maiden five-wicket haul but Pakistan's tail was unruffled on a typical slow wicket at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
Captain Misbah-ul-Haq narrowly missed out on a century after Pakistan resumed at 4-304 when Gabriel had him trapped lbw with the second new ball.
Misbah could add only six to his overnight 90 before he was undone by Gabriel's incoming delivery on Saturday.
Nightwatchman Yasir Shah played a 23-run cameo and denied West Indies for nearly an hour before he fell to captain Jason Holder (3-47).
But Sarfraz Ahmed survived a close runout early in his innings and made 56 off 59 balls with six fours, while Sohail Khan (26) and Mohammad Nawaz (25) also made useful contributions.
Sohail survived two close lbw appeals against Gabriel before he smacked the fast bowler for three boundaries off four deliveries to help Pakistan cross the 450 mark.
