Westpac deputy chief executive Phil Coffey will retire at the end of May after more than 20 years with the lender.

Mr Coffey was Westpac's head of institutional banking and chief financial officer prior to his three-year spell as deputy, first to Gail Kelly and then to current chief executive Brian Hartzer.

Chief executive Brian Hartzer said Westpac had benefited from Mr Coffey's financial services experience, business judgement and insightful leadership.

"Notably, Phil oversaw Westpac's contribution to the federal government's Financial System Inquiry and is currently leading work underway to rebuild customer trust," Mr Hartzer said in a statement.

Mr Coffey will now pursue a career as a non-executive director.
