Westpac says EFTPOS and ATM facilities are up and running again after an outage triggered by an air-conditioning fault at a data centre.

EFTPOS machines at railway stations and some Westpac bank terminals in Sydney had been not operating on Thursday after the data centre shut down due to the airconditioning failure.

"This fault has now been rectified," Westpac said in a statement on Thursday.

"Customers can now conduct banking transactions as per normal across ATMs, EFTPOS, telephone banking and in branches.

"Our immediate focus is now on restoring full functionality to online banking."

Westpac's Retail and Business Banking chief Rob Coombe said Westpac apologised to all customers impacted by the outage.

Westpac did not say how widespread the problem was.
