What is happening with Arrium?

The South Australian government has provided details on the voluntary administration of steelmaker Arrium.

ARRIUM: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

* Steel and mining group Arrium, based in Whyalla, South Australia, has gone into voluntary administration.

* Company has 3000 workers in SA, 3000 in NSW, 1000 in Queensland and 1000 in Victoria.

* SA Premier Jay Weatherill has spoken to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull pledging to continue to work closely.

* SA Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says it's "business as usual" and workers are required to report to work and will be paid as usual. "Nothing is going to shut down," he says.

* Koutsantonis says it wasn't the government's preferred option for Arrium to go into voluntary administration.

* Creditors meeting will be held in eight days.

* SA treasurer will meet with banks, administrator and community advisory task force on Friday.

* Banks were aware state and federal governments were "prepared to use their balance sheets" to assist Arrium, including federal pre-purchase of steel for a major rail line, but acted anyway.

* SA government is prepared to make an unspecified investment in Arrium.
