HOW PORTE HAS PERFORMED AT THE TOUR DE FRANCE
* Porte's best stage result is second and his best overall result is fifth
* 2011: A year after his breakout seventh overall at the Giro d'Italia, Porte makes his Tour debut in the same year that Cadel Evans wins it. Domestique for Saxo Bank-Sungard leader Alberto Contador
* 2012: Switches to Team Sky. Porte and compatriot Mick Rogers are key mountain domestiques for winner Brad Wiggins and runner-up Chris Froome. Some Australian fans abuse Porte and Rogers for riding against defending champion Evans
* 2013: Team Sky. Porte is second overall behind Froome after stage eight, but the following day sacrifices himself for his team and great friend as rivals try to break Sky's domination. Froome claims his first Tour de France title

* 2014: Team Sky. Froome abandons after crashing twice on a sodden fourth stage. Porte is Sky's Plan B, but he drops out of contention on stage 10 in the Alps. He has a chest infection and ends the season suffering from pneumonia.
* 2015: Team Sky. Froome wins again. As the team vehemently denies doping suspicions, a fan punches Porte in the ribs on a Pyrenees stage. Porte is sick again and spends about half the race on antibiotics.
* 2016: BMC. Porte starts the race as joint team leader with American Tejay Van Garderen and it quickly becomes clear the Australian is their best hope. Porte finishes fifth, his best Tour result, but for a stage-two puncture it could have been second. Also is caught in the Mont Ventoux madness, where Froome briefly runs up the hill after they crash.
