WHAT AUSTRALIA NEEDS TO QUALIFY FOR ROUND OF 16

Essentially, the equation is this: win and hope.

The Socceroos' 1-1 draw with Denmark and France's 1-0 defeat of Peru ensures Les Bleus will be in the knockout stage and confirms Peru cannot continue on in Russia.

It leaves Denmark and Australia in a shootout to accompany France in the round of 16, with the Socceroos' World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

But Bert van Marwijk's side can still continue on in Russia past next week's showdown against Peru in Sochi.
