THE BEST LINE

THE BEST LINE (NOT)

"I'm not surprised that Bill Shorten will want to throw mud around on a day when he's stuck on a costings merry-go-round which he doesn't seem to be able to get off."

- Scott Morrison after Bill Shorten raised questions over the government's Murray-Darling Basin water purchases. Mr Shorten did go on a carousel with his daughter while on the election campaign in Melbourne on Saturday"

- Mr Morrison on a $65 million pledge for a dedicated cystic fibrosis specialist unit at Sydney's Westmead hospital.

LABOR LEADER BILL SHORTEN

"The current prime minister, he cut the funding to the schools. He has cut the funding to hospitals. But perhaps to show how truly callous they are, you have to look at their performance on penalty rates."

- Mr Shorten promising to restore penalty rates in the first 100 days should he win the May 18 election.

THE SUPPORTING CAST

"Not only does Mr Shorten have a $6 billion hole in his policy, it's a cruel, cruel hoax."

--

"The report makes it clear, public hospital capacity is determined by funding. Nothing will improve until our hospitals are better funded."

Labor health spokeswoman Catherine King on AMA report showing hospitals are "over stretched" and "over burdened".

--

"We need a Royal Commission. (hashtag)watergate."

- Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young tweeting that she is writing to the Auditor General requesting an urgent audit into all water purchases signed off by Barnaby Joyce.
