What we know about the Vanuatu bus crash

Australians who were badly injured in a fatal bus crash in Vanuatu will begin arriving in Brisbane on Tuesday afternoon.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THE VANUATU BUS CRASH:

* 12 Australians injured, 10 seriously

* They range in age from children to the elderly

* Victims have head injuries, broken bones and open wounds

* Medical experts say it's touch and go for some

* All were on a P&O cruise and had boarded a tour bus when it collided head on with a local commuter bus in Port Vila

* Three locals died

* Three of the worst-injured Aussies have been flown to Noumea for specialist care

* CareFlight expects to return two seriously injured victims to Brisbane on Tuesday afternoon

* The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital is readying teams to treat victims

* NSW couple Moyna Exley and Brian Exley, aged in their 70s, are among the wounded. They have broken bones and open wounds.

* P&O cruise ship Pacific Dawn to stay in Vanuatu until medical evacuations are complete

* Vanuatu's government has promised a full investigation
