Wheelchair basketball fans in huge brawl

Knives and baseball bats have been used in an all-in brawl between fans of two Turkish wheelchair basketball clubs in Germany.

A wheelchair basketball match in Germany has been abandoned after an all-in brawl between fans of bitter rivals Galatasaray and Besiktas.

The Turkish clubs were playing in an IWBF Eurocup game in Zwickau.

About 60 fans, some armed with weapons including knives and baseball bats were involved in the brawl, according to media reports.

"The game had to be abandoned and seven fans were taken to nearby hospitals. Six of them were released after receiving treatment," local police said in a statement.

The two Istanbul teams have a fierce rivalry in soccer and basketball, with fans banned from visiting opposing venues, but the ban does not extend to wheelchair basketball.

It's not the first time a wheelchair basketball match between the two sides has erupted into chaos.

Fans needed to be separated by riot police using tear gas and 10 people were arrested after fighting broke out at a 2012 match in Istanbul.
