Where Aussie girls feel inequality most

A survey of more than 1700 Australian girls has discovered most feel they are treated unequally to boys in all areas of life.

WHERE DO AUSSIE GIRLS FEEL INEQUALITY MOST?

GIRLS AGED 10-14

* 84 pct in sports and in magazines

* 78 pct on television

* 55 pct at school

* 39 pct at home

GIRLS AGED 15-17

* 94 pct in sports

* 93 pct in magazines

* 92 pct on television

* 71 pct at school

* 64 pct at home

WHY DO GIRLS FEEL THEY ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY IN SPORTS?

* Wage gap between male and female athletes

* Fears they will appear unattractive or unfeminine

WHAT ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO HOME LIFE?

* Around two-thirds of girls thought they did more housework than boys

* On average women spend almost four hours a day on housework and childcare, compared to two hours for men

HOW CAN SCHOOLS HELP?

* Removing gendered uniforms

* Removing gendered subjects

* Teaching girls and boys about respectful relationships

* Empower young girls to believe in themselves

HOW DOES THE MEDIA REINFORCE GENDER INEQUALITY?

* Half of girls aged 15-19 said they felt more valued for their looks than their brains

* 85 pct said it would be easier for girls to be leaders if women were shown doing 'mens jobs' in the media

HOW CAN THIS CHANGE?

* Enforcing guidelines around positive language and imagery of women

* Reducing the use of airbrushed and photoshopped images

* Celebrating female role models who break the glass ceiling

* Prohibit sexist content
