Where the states stand on energy guarantee

Australia's energy ministers have agreed to more detailed design being done on the National Energy Guarantee but some will still fight where it's headed.

WHAT THE STATES HAVE TO SAY ON THE NATIONAL ENERGY GUARANTEE

ACT

Greens leader and Climate Change Minister Shane Rattenbury says he does not support the guarantee in its current form. However, he has agreed to keep working on it because "we need to stay at the table".

Queensland

Energy Minister Anthony Lynham says Queensland 's target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030 remains "rock-solid" and the guarantee must provide a framework for industry and jobs to grow in the state.

Victoria

Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio hopes work in coming months will make the agreement more to Victoria's liking, adding the federal emissions targets are "very weak" but she has been assured the state's own 40 per cent renewable energy target by 2025 will be honoured.

Western Australia

WA has its own electricity network and is not part of the national grid. Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion says the state has a more carbon-efficient energy system and should be rewarded, not penalised under the guarantee.

South Australia

With the Liberal party ousting the Labor state government, new Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said before the meeting on Friday the state was likely to agree to the NEG if the details supported SA.
