Whincup looked destined to become just the second driver in Supercars history to reach the milestone but was passed by Van Gisbergen with two laps to go in Saturday's race.
Van Gisbergen held on to secure his fourth race win of the year with Whincup coming home second.

Whincup started from third on the grid but ended the opening lap in first position after passing pole position holder Chris Pither and Chaz Mostert.
He held onto the lead for the majority of the next 35 laps before Van Gisbergen's late move.
