White sprints to first Warrny cycling win

A month after winning the Australian under-23 road title, Ballarat cyclist Nicholas White has taken out the Melbourne to Warrnambool classic.

In-form youngster Nicholas White has claimed one of Australian cycling's biggest domestic honours, winning the Melbourne to Warrnambool classic.

The 21-year-old Ballarat rider won a reduced bunch sprint on Saturday to take out the 262km race.

It comes a month after White won the Australian under-23 road title and also rode for the UniSA national team at the Tour Down Under.

The Team BridgeLane rider beat Harrison Bailey and Brendan Johnston was third.

They were in the lead group of 13 that dominated the race and finished more than 10 minutes ahead of the next riders.

Former Australian road champion Peta Mullens was the first woman, placing 38th.

She was in the peloton that finished 11 minutes 16 seconds behind the leaders.

The Warrny is cycling's longest one-day race in the southern hemisphere.

It was not held last year as the race was moved from its traditional late-year slot to February.

The event also had a new start location at Avalon, in Melbourne's outer west.
