Melbourne Renegades want Chris Gayle to let his hefty gilt-edged Spartan do the talking when they take on the Melbourne Stars in what could be a record crowd on Saturday night.

The Renegades host the Stars in their Big Bash League clash and with Aaron Finch on ODI duty need Gayle's best with the bat.

It will be Gayle's first appearance for the Renegades since his controversial sideline interview with Network Ten journalist Melanie McLaughlin that earned the Jamaican a $10,000 fine.

There has also been talk he could be banned from playing in the next T20 competition although Cricket Australia hasn't confirmed this.

Cameron White, who has taken over the captaincy from Finch - who is absent on one-day international duty - said the team had spent the day on Thursday playing lawn bowls and Gayle had been in "good spirits".

"Speaking to him and looking at his body language I think he's in a good place so hopefully what's happened this week won't affect his cricket too much," White said.

The former Australian representative couldn't see any reason why Gayle should be prevented from suiting up again.

"Yes, why not?" White said.

"The Renegades and Cricket Australia have had their say, the incident has happened and Chris has apologised so now it's matter of concentrating on the game tomorrow night and hopefully Chris can play a big part in winning that game."

White, who was the Stars captain until he was cut before this season, said the loss of Finch would be a blow for the his new side but the recruitment of Gayle would help cover him at the top of the order.

"Finchy's the best T20 player in the world and has made three scores above 50 in five hits so he's hard to replace.

"Having Chris there still keeps the opposition bowlers under a lot of pressure.

"He's been threatening to play a real big hand, so hopefully tomorrow night he does it."

The Stars won their last match on Saturday night by seven wickets but White said with both teams losing players to international duty, it was a different match.

The Stars are missing Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Scott Boland on ODI duty while the Renegades have made four changes to their 13-man squad, with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade also called up to the national side.

Renegades: Cameron White (capt), Aaron Ayre, Dwayne Bravo, Tom Beaton, Tom Cooper, Xavier Doherty, Cameron Gannon, Chris Gayle, Nathan Hauritz, Ben McDermott, Peter Nevill, Cameron Stevenson, Chris Tremain.
