"Who needs 300 guns in Sydney?": Greens

The Greens are using data on gun ownership in NSW, the ACT and South Australia to push for a national firearms register.

The Greens are increasing their push for a national firearms register using data showing some Australians are holding hundreds of guns.

The figures from NSW, the ACT and South Australia show some private individuals holding more than 200 firearms, with one person owning 285 in the Sydney suburb of Mosman.

"This new data shows how urgent it is for Prime Minister Turnbull to take the lead and establish a national firearms register," Greens senator Lee Rhiannon said on Thursday.

"Why does anyone need to own more than 300 guns in suburban Sydney or Newcastle?"

Senator Rhiannon claims weak freedom of information laws and a culture of secrecy pushed by the gun lobby means no one can find out how many guns there are in Victoria, Queensland or Western Australia.

TOP FIVE PRIVATE ARSENALS IN NSW

* 312 guns - Moonbi, near Tamworth

* 310 guns - Cardiff, near Newcastle

* 305 guns - La Perouse

* 285 guns - Mosman

* 268 guns - North Sydney
