The United Nations' public health agency, the World Health Organisation, is urging Australia's government to keep its funding pledge to eliminate polio globally.

WHO urges Australia to keep its polio pledge

The previous Labor government pledged 80-million-dollars in May towards efforts to eliminate polio by 2018.

The re-emergence of polio in Syria last month has the organisation concerned about its spread, not only to countries neighbouring Syria but also to the countries where Syrian refugees are fleeing.

The World Health Organisation's senior adviser on polio eradication, Chris Maher, is in Australia to meet government officials.

He told Biwa Kwan Australia has an important role to play in stopping the spread of polio.
