The southern state of Virginia was once a Republican bastion, until US President Barack Obama took it comfortably in 2008. He was the first Democrat to win there since 1964.
Because of the electoral college system, President Obama can lose in Virginia, but still return to the Oval Office if he takes Ohio.
Instead, Republican candidate Mitt Romney needs to win Virginia to get into the White House, which is why he's planning repeat visits there over the next 12 days, SBS Senior Correspondent Brian Thomson reports.
