Malcolm Turnbull was hailed as a rockstar on the Sydney streets of Hurstville, but one man couldn't help giving him a serve.

The prime minister and wife Lucy caught the train from Martin Place on Wednesday morning, rolling into Hurstville station to the surprise of fellow commuters.

But one man wasn't happy to see Mr Turnbull when the carriage doors opened.

"After the way John Howard lied to us why should we believe anything you have to say?" the man asked.

"Everything I've said in this election is absolutely straight," the prime minister replied.

But the man was not satisfied.

"It's the hidden agenda, that's the real problem."

"It's all in the budget, sir. We've been very upfront," Mr Turnbull went on, before the man gave up, wishing him a lovely day.

After the initial hiccup, it was mayhem as he and Mrs Turnbull swiped their Opal cards at the turnstiles - constantly being asked for selfies.

The pair even stopped traffic on the steep exit stairs, as excited locals tried desperately to catch a glimpse of the couple from a nearby escalator.

The Turnbulls waved at shopkeepers as they walked arm in arm, alongside local Liberal member for Barton Nikolas Varvaris and sitting Banks MP David Coleman.

Mr Varvaris is facing a tough battle, with his seat now in Labor's favour after a redistribution.

Waiting in the foyer of Sunny Harbour Seafood Restaurant for a family reunion was Alex Turnbull, his wife Yvonne and their daughter Isla.

The family joined tables of patrons enjoying brunch upstairs.

Sitting in a booster chair, between her parents little Isla tapped the table with a pair of chopsticks as her grandparents made introductions.

"Isla's hungry," Mrs Turnbull said.

She enjoyed some pieces of steamed dumplings, as Mr Turnbull served cups of tea.

Even at the table, the family couldn't escape excited onlookers, mobbed by members of the Chinese community eager to get photos.
