Widdop confident he can keep Hunt combo

A move to fullback shouldn't stop the dangerous combination Gareth Widdop found with Ben Hunt at St George Illawarra last season.

St George Illawarra skipper Gareth Widdop is confident he can maintain his dangerous play-making combination with Ben Hunt even with his switch to fullback.

Hunt and Widdop were among the NRL's best halves combinations when firing at the start of last season, as the Dragons led the competition for points scored over the first 12 rounds.

The pair regularly combined directly in attack, as Widdop floated to both sides of the field with the Red V on a roll.

But even with recruit Corey Norman taking the No.6 jersey, the Englishman insists he'll be able to blend with Hunt just as much as they did last year.

"It's something we've been working on," Widdop said.

"Our structures haven't changed much from last year, we just added Corey who is another ball player in the squad.

"I don't think I played too dissimilar to a fullback last year.

"I get to roam around the field a bit more now. I'm still learning the position and I will still work as the weeks go on."

Widdop has worked closely this summer in preparation for the move with former Dragons captain Ben Hornby who moved the other way from No.1 to No.6 in his career.

The 29-year-old has only started at fullback six times in his 185 NRL games but starred there for his country in the 2017 World Cup.

"It's a different team with different structures but I've got a little bit of confidence from that," Widdop said.

Meanwhile the Dragons backline for Saturday's clash with North Queensland is taking shape, with Tim Lafai and Euan Aitken looking likely to start in the centres.

Mikaele Ravalawa appears a chance to debut on the right wing, with Jordan Pereira on the left after re-signing until the end of 2021 on Monday.
