Widespread rain sweeps across Qld

Queensland will endure widespread rainfall over the weekend, but forecasters say it won't be as damaging as the east coast low earlier this month.

Wild weather sweeping across central and southern Queensland won't be as bad as an east coast low that ravaged parts of the state, NSW and Tasmania earlier this month, forecasters say.

A flood watch issued by the Bureau of Meteorology remained current on Saturday afternoon as a rain band swept across from the state's west.

The heaviest rainfall was 64mm recorded at Urandangi, southwest of Mt Isa, however significant falls were possible over the interior to Longreach, according to meteorologist Andrew Bufalino.

"Rainfall totals will likely increase 40-80mm with some totals in excess of 100mm under thunderstorms," he told AAP.

The southeast coast is also expected to receive significant rainfall on Sunday, with widespread totals of between 20 and 50mm.

"There might be some local flooding, especially if you do get a heavy thunderstorm, but as far as comparing it to the last system this is much weaker," Mr Bufalino said.

"However, this is much more extensive, so it's definitely a healthy drop for Queensland."

Seqwater's Flood Operations Centre was placed on alert due to the predictions of heavy rain in catchments.

Gate releases were possible from the Wivenhoe, Somerset and North Pine Dams, Seqwater said.
