A severe weather warning has been cancelled for Adelaide after a day of fierce winds and rain that cut power to about 3000 properties.

Most services had been restored by late Monday as conditions moderated, though strong winds and showers were set to persist into Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology also maintained a flood watch for the Adelaide Hills, but limited its severe weather warning to SA's southeast, as a vigorous front which brought the wintry blast continued to move east.

The conditions caused widespread minor damage, bringing down trees and powerlines.

Wind gusts of more than 90km/h were recorded in several places including Parndana on Kangaroo Island and at Mount Gambier.

Minor flooding also closed some roads, including one at Oakbank, in the Adelaide Hills where rainfall topped 17mm.

The Brighton to Seaford rail line was also closed in Adelaide's southern suburbs after strong winds damaged powerlines.

Stranded train passengers were directed to bus services.
