Gale force winds and severe wet weather are expected for coastal areas of New South Wales this weekend prompting an early warning so residents can prepare.
Heavy seas are thought to have claimed the life of a rock fisherman at Kiama on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Tasmanian townships are under flood watch as thunderstorms lash the east coast with heavy rain.
Wild weather in NSW
The low pressure system is expected to deepen off the southern New South Wales coast early tomorrow morning before moving northwards to the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter coastal areas.
The weather bureau says it expects gale force winds and heavy surf with significant wave heights of five metres and above in NSW.
And although the worst of the weather isn't expected to arrive until tomorrow morning, heavy seas are thought to have claimed the life of a rock fisherman on Friday night.
Surf life saving crews pulled the body of the man from the sea after emergency services were called to Friars Cave in southern Kiama.
Tasmania on flood watch
Three main roads into St Marys, about 130 kilometres east of Launceston in Tasmania, have been closed after nearly 200 millimetres of rain drenched nearby areas in less than 12 hours.
The main town hall in St Marys has been opened for displaced residents while a section of the Tasman Highway, about five kilometres north of Bicheno, has been flooded.
