A deep low-pressure system is sweeping across South Australia, prompting a severe weather warning for some areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology says wind gusts of up to 100 km/h can be expected, with significant rainfall also forecast.

The areas most likely to feel the impact of the wild weather include the lower parts of the Eyre and Yorke peninsulas, Kangaroo Island and an area of the Adelaide Hills, stretching up to the mid-north.

Towns to be affected include Port Lincoln, Kingscote, Ellison, Victor Harbor, Burra and Cummins.

The worst of the weather is expected to miss the Adelaide metropolitan area.
