Wildcats NBL coach Gleeson joins Boomers

Australia are aiming to snare a medal at the Basketball World Cup in Spain and have been boosted by the addition of Trevor Gleeson as an assistant coach.

Perth Wildcats title-winning coach Trevor Gleeson will link up with the Boomers' coaching staff as an assistant for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

Gleeson, who led the Wildcats to this season's NBL title, will assist head coach Andrej Lemanis as Australia's men's basketball team attempt to snare a medal at the August 30-September 15 tournament.

It will be Gleeson's first time working with the Boomers after more than 20 years of coaching in the USA, South Korea and the NBL.

He replaces 2013/14 NBL Coach of the year Gordie McLeod on the Boomers' staff with the Wollongong Hawks' mentor making himself unavailable for the World Cup.

Gleeson will join Cairns Taipans coach Mick Downer as a Boomers assistant.

Former NBA champion Luc Longley and NBL coaching legend Dr Adrian Hurley complete the coaching staff roster.

"With the young talent coming through the program now, it's an exciting time to be a part of the Boomers and we need to make sure we get the most out of the group in Spain," Gleeson said.

"I can't wait to get in there and help Andrej, and do all we can to get the players to perform on the world stage."

Lemanis was happy to secure the services of Gleeson.

"I always enjoyed competing against Trevor during my time in the NBL," Lemanis said.

"I really respected the way Trevor coached his team to the NBL Championship this year.

"His demeanour on the sidelines, the respect he had from his players and the style in which they played suggested a real maturity in his coaching."
