Wildcats super sub given licence to thrill

The Perth Wildcats will be aiming to continue their recent hot form when they take on the Illawarra Hawks at RAC Arena on Friday night.

Perth Wildcats super sub Clint Steindl has been given a licence to let it rain as the club attempts to capitalise on his hot shooting from beyond the arc.

Steindl has enjoyed a remarkable purple patch over the past two games.

In the 88-68 win over the Sydney Kings, Steindl nailed six of 10 from three-point range on the way to an 18-point haul.

Two days earlier in the 100-81 win over Adelaide, Steindl had five of seven from long range on the way to 19 points.

Steindl will be back in action on Friday night when the Wildcats host the Illawarra Hawks at RAC Arena.

Perth Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson wants to see Steindl continue to back himself.

"More times than not we have to tell him to be aggressive," Gleeson said.

"My philosophy is as soon as he steps over half court, let it rip. He has that ability.

"He's got a great shot. He's got great height on the shot, so no one can really get to it unless they're coming from behind. He can get on a roll pretty quickly.

"If you get a purple patch, the basket looks three times bigger than it is. Sometimes when you get your eye in, you're not even looking at the ring and it will go in."

Damian Martin, Bryce Cotton, Terrico White, and Sunday Dech will spend more time in the point guard role to help cover the loss of Mitch Norton for the Wildcats.

Norton will miss the rest of the regular season with a torn calf, and he's no certainty to be fit for the finals.

The Wildcats sit in second spot with a 15-9 record, and finish their season against Sydney (home), Adelaide (home), and Melbourne (away) after Friday's game against the Hawks.

The Hawks (11-12) are desperate to beat Perth in order to keep their finals hopes alive.
