Independent MP Andrew Wilkie is demanding Australian governments be held to account over the 2003 invasion of Iraq after Tony Blair admitted the war contributed to the rise of Islamic State.

Mr Wilkie, who resigned as a senior intelligence analyst in protest against Australia's involvement in the war in 2003, is calling for an Australian inquiry similar to the UK's Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq War.

All governments - from John Howard's to Malcolm Turnbull's - should be held responsible for Australia's involvement in the region, he says in a statement on Monday, condemning Australia's bombing in Syria as "reckless".
