Wilkie more confident of pokies reform

Independent MP Andrew Wilkie says he is more confident his push for mandatory pre-commitment on poker machines will be successful.

Under the scheme prepared by Mr Wilkie, patrons would have to nominate their maximum losses before they started playing on the pokies.

The legislation is not due until early 2012 before coming into effect by 2014.

"I won't talk about individuals but I am still confident that I have the numbers," Mr Wilkie told ABC television on Monday.

"In fact, I am more confident than ever that these reforms are going to go ahead."

Mr Wilkie has always stated his support for the minority Labor government was contingent on gambling reform.

He said his confidence was based on more than the government just honouring its post-2010 election agreement to him.

"I do sense the prime minister and the relevant minister, Jenny Macklin, have their heart in it," he said.

"So I am actually quite confident that we'll see success."
