Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie has denied he has done any deal to support a coalition government.

But he said he would only support a no-confidence motion in a coalition government or reject the government's money bills in a case of proven misconduct.

He said he had faced pressure, including from former Greens leader Bob Brown, to do a deal with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in order to achieve particular benefits for Tasmania.

Mr Wilkie said it had been suggested he had in some way promised support for Mr Turnbull.

"I have given no support to any party, no support to any leader. I have done no deal with any party," he told reporters in Hobart.

Mr Wilkie said he would only support a move against budget supply or a no-confidence motion if it was clearly warranted, which could only arise if the government was shown not fit to govern or engaged in misconduct.

So far other independents Bob Katter and Cathy McGowan have undertaken to support the coalition in any no-confidence motion or vote against supply.

Mr Wilkie said it appeared that the coalition had the numbers and there was no way Bill Shorten could form government.

"In that situation that I now find myself, I want to be constructive, I am not going to be opportunistic, I am not going to be destructive and I will approach everything on its merits," he said.

"This is a time for cool heads. It's not a time for point-scoring."

Mr Wilkie said his electorate of Denison was clearly Labor-leaning but he was elected as an independent who would consider each issue as it arose.

He said he would be seeking to help Tasmania as much as possible and in the last week had many discussions with Mr Turnbull.

"It is in this electorate's best interest, it in the state's best interests, that I have good working relationship with him," he said.
