London-bound travellers risk sharing their beds with some unwelcome visitors.

Parasitic, blood-sucking bed bugs are widespread in the Olympic city, thanks to a global resurgence that has infiltrated urban centres around the world.

Staying in a fancy hotel may not lessen your chances of getting bitten, says Dr Cameron Webb, hospital scientist and Lecturer from the University of Sydney. “Travellers going to the Olympics have to be aware that wherever they're staying, they're at risk of being exposed to bed bugs.”

Jetsetters can lessen their chances of bed bug bites by inspecting their room furniture and bed clothes for the tiny brown mites before tucking in for the night.

“Probably the best thing you can do [to avoid bed bug bites] is wear pyjamas, because we know bed bugs tend to prefer to bite on exposed skin,” says Dr Webb.
