Will the mining tax affect the economy?

The Rudd government planned to introduce a new 40 per cent 'super profits' tax on mining companies to raise an additional $9 billion a year to help return the budget to surplus, saying all Australians deserve a share of the country's resources wealth. New PM Julia Gillard says she is willing to negotiate with the mining industry on the tax.The Opposition is strongly opposed to the tax, saying it will kill the mining boom, send resource companies overseas and affect jobs and the economy.
